THE SCRATCH® RUSSIAN ROMANCE
Smolny Cathedral, St Petersburg
Information for singers
You need to bring your own scores, since we will not be taking spares in our hand luggage; besides, we would like you to do some advance preparation, please, to familiarise yourselves with the notes. The Te Deum for the Empress Marie Therese Hob XXIIIc:2 is one of two settings of the Te Deum by Haydn; be sure to get the right one (the same one which was greatly enjoyed by the group on the Iberian Cruise last autumn). We will use the 1992 edition by Denis McCaldin, published by Oxford University Press (ISBN 0-19-336776-9); other editions are not compatible. All editions known to us of Mozart’s Coronation Mass in C KV317 are compatible, however. Both works will be sung in Latin. If your local music shop cannot supply copies, then you can order from Music Dynamics either by telephone on 01242 679379 or via their website. Music Dynamics also offer ChoraLine CDs and cassettes to enable you to learn your part in advance.
To help you arrive prepared and ready to sing, we will be compiling a page of chorus instructions which we will ask you to copy into the appropriate pages in your scores. These notes will be sent out to everyone three weeks prior to the trip, but you will be able to download them in advance well before September.
Dress for the concert in Smolny Cathedral will be announced once we have seen this venue for ourselves, but in such a prestigious builidng we are likely to recommend smart attire: suits for gentlemen and dark dresses/suits/trouser suits for ladies. Our colour-coded TRBC polo shirts (blue/red/white/black for S/A/T/B) are unlikely to be suitable, but would be fine for rehearsals and excursions (you can download an order form here if you don’t already have one).
