THE SCRATCH® MALTESE MESSIAH
Mdina Cathedral, Malta
Information for singers
Handel’s Messiah is published by Novello, and the familiar Prout edition is the one commonly used by TRBC members. However, the Watkins Shaw, Bärenreiter and Peters editions are all musically compatible although page numbers will differ. If your local music shop cannot help you, then you can order from Music Dynamics either by telephone on 01242 679379 or via their website. Music Dynamics also offer ChoraLine CDs and cassettes to enable you to learn your part in advance.
To help you arrive prepared and ready to sing, Brian Kay has compiled a page of chorus instructions which we ask you to copy into the appropriate pages in your score. Please take note: several numbers normally omitted in our performances of Messiah from Scratch® at the Royal Albert Hall will be included in the Malta concert—please check the chorus notes and ensure that you learn these in advance if you are not already familiar with them from performances with other choirs. To ensure that all singers are aware of this, we will be sending these notes out in advance to all those who have already booked, and will send them again when we send the final itinerary just before the event. However, you can also download them here (if you want to print them you will need one A4 page).
Dress for the concert in Mdina Cathedral should be formal, and our TRBC polo shirts are not really suitable (but ideal for rehearsals if it is warm enough!). Gentlemen should wear dinner jackets or dark suits, with a black bow tie in either case; ladies should wear medium length dark dresses, suits or trouser suits. (Where we say dark, black is preferred, otherwise the darker the better.) Please note that the Cathedral stipulates modest dress for ladies: low-cut or off-the-shoulder tops/dresses will not be permitted.
