Jan Capinski (baritone) was born in Kraków, Poland and studied at the Academy of Music with Janusz Borowicz. In 2011, he gained a Post-Graduate Diploma at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff. He recently graduated with distinction from an MA in Opera Performance at the RWCMD, studying under Adrian Thompson and coached by Michael Pollock, Ingrid Surgenor and Angela Livingstone. Awards include the 2013 Silver Medal from the Worshipful Company of Musicians and also the Simon Sandbach Award (Garsington Opera) in recognition of his contribution and musical skill during their 2013 season. Jan is currently training on English National Opera’s Opera Works professional development programme.
Operatic roles whilst at the Academy of Music in Kraków included Aeneas Dido and Aeneas, Figaro and Il Conte Le nozze di Figaro and whilst at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama he has performed the roles of Eisenstein Die Fledermaus, Il Conte Le nozze di Figaro and Tarquinius The Rape of Lucretia. Other roles include Aeneas, Adonis Venus & Adonis for Sforza Baroque; Escamillo Carmen for St Magnus Festival; Papageno The Magic Flute and The Count The Marriage of Figaro for Opera’r Ddraig; understudy Pluto Orpheus in the Underworld for Scottish Opera; and understudy Guglielmo Così fan tutte for Banff Festival Opera, Canada. Contemporary operatic roles include Brooklyn Boy Lillian Alling by John Estacio for Banff Festival Opera, Canada; Alamar The Shadow of the Wave by Tom Floyd for Tête à Tête Opera Festival; The Lizard The Nightingale and the Rose by Tom Floyd for Rogue Opera; and understudy Actor A Night at the Chinese Opera by Judith Weir with British Youth Opera.
Concert performances include Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle, Bach’s Mass in B minor, Fauré’s Requiem, Orff’s Carmina Burana, and Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. He also sang the part of Blues Singer in the Street Chorus in Leonard Bernstein’s Mass with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales as part of the BBC Proms 2012 at the Royal Albert Hall.
Highlights last season include singing for HRH The Prince of Wales at the RWCMD, Tarquinius in the RWCMD production of The Rape of Lucretia, Smirnov in Walton’s The Bear at La Mortella on the Island of Ischia and understudying the role of Peter in Hänsel und Gretel for Garsington Opera. Other recent engagements include Escamillo Carmen for Winterbourne Opera, the title-role in Tom Floyd’s Micromégas for Tête à Tête Opera Festival and participating in BYO’s summer production of Britten’s Paul Bunyan as a principal and understudy.
This season he will sing Eisenstein Die Fledermaus for OperaUpClose. Future plans include Second Prisoner Fidelio and understudy Forester in The Cunning Little Vixen, both for Garsington Opera and Peter Hänsel und Gretel at West Green House.
