THE TRBC CHORAL SUMMER SCHOOL
Warwick University/Coventry Cathedral
Tuesday 11–Sunday 16 August 2015
Our second TRBC Summer School was even better than the first, especially the final concert which was a terrific performance by any standard. We also had a simply wonderful evening with John Rutter on Wednesday when he and Brian Kay just chatted together like the old friends they are, and fascinated us with stories of places and personalities. We all thought how lucky we were to be ‘listening in’.
Brian used the daily rehearsals not only to improve the accuracy of both notes and German pronunciation in the Brahms Requiem, but also to encourage us to explore the thoughts and emotions beyond the printed page. He was greatly helped by Chris Finch as our accompanist and coach, who also gave us a lot of fun in the light music sessions. Additionally, being redundant as a pianist once the orchestra took over, he cheerfully added his voice to the tenor section. (Chris’s baby daughter Ella also provided a delightful distraction at times.)
‘What a wonderful week in Warwick! I can’t let it pass into the depths of the memory bank without thanking everyone for such generosity of spirit in a glorious week of music-making. The beautiful German Requiem achieved a performance which exceeded all my possible hopes and expectations. The sheer beauty of choral sound in the cathedral will remain with me for a long time. Lucky us – and I hope we shall all meet again next year.’ To remind yourselves about Brian’s pre-dinner grace on Friday, click here!
What you said:
‘I really did enjoy the summer school: lots of lovely music, tuition, singing, company and fun!’ (Linda, Gloucestershire)
‘I want to congratulate you all on a fantastic Summer School. It was my first, and I found it inspirational and wonderfully enjoyable.’ (Jo, Camberley)
‘I enjoyed it a lot, first and foremost musically but also all the rest. And everything was so well organised: it was really impressive. Also, I was impressed by the quality of the food where the only problem was not to eat too much…’ (Cecilia, Geneva)
