THE SCRATCH® YOUTH MESSIAH
Royal Albert Hall
Our third Scratch® Youth Messiah was the best yet, with almost 1,400 young people from 40 choirs joining us for a morning rehearsal prior to the afternoon performance. School choirs, church choirs and youth choirs all combined to sing this mainstay of the UK choral repertoire: almost half the choirs sang everything, with others singing at least three ‘core’ choruses plus others as resources permitted. The result was a really fresh-sounding performance which would have been a credit to any concert hall.
The performance was accompanied by members of the English Festival Orchestra (leader Jonathan Evans-Jones), and the four soloists were Sarah Power (soprano), Angharad Lyddon (mezzo), Nick Pritchard (tenor) and Marcus Farnsworth (baritone). The Royal Albert Hall’s ‘Father’ Willis organ was played by Stephen Disley, and the conductor was Suzi Digby OBE.
The concert supported WaterAid through programme sales, bucket collections, sales of merchandise and fundraising efforts from the choirs. Singers were encouraged in their efforts to raise money by the promise of a £500 prize generously donated by online music retailer ChoraLine (Music Dynamics). The choir raising the most money was the Hackney Children’s Choir, under their Director Tom Daggett; they raised over £600 – a truly amazing result from a choir of just 20 primary-aged children, and greatly deserving of their prize. The Scratch® Youth Messiah raised over £5,340 for WaterAid’s life-saving work, and the sum raised by the bucket collections (just under £1,400) will also be doubled by the UK Government, taking the total to £6,735.
What you thought:
‘Every child had a fantastic time and parents were beaming with pride. We will definitely be back next year!’ (St Edward’s, Cheltenham)
‘I thought that atmosphere, organisation and leadership were superb and our students and their parents thoroughly enjoyed it.’ (English Martyrs’ School, Leicester)
