THE SCRATCH® SORRENTO SERENADE
In the spring of 2014 we visited the beautiful Amalfi coast for a little of la dolce vita, staying in the elegant resort of Sorrento and swapping the peace and quiet of this little seaside town for the bustle of Naples on our concert day. Our performing venue was dramatic setting of the Salo Sisto V, the former refectory of the Monastery of San Lorenzo Maggiore, below which are the well-preserved remains of the original Roman Forum.
Our performance was of Mozart’s Requiem, conducted by Brian Kay, and we were accompanied by members of the Accademia San Giovanni with soloists from the Conservatory of Music in Naples – Serena Stabile (soprano), Daniela My (contralto), Michele D’Abundo (tenor) and Luigi Narducci (bass).
As with all our overseas trips, there was plenty of time for excursions, and many of our singers took advantage of excursions to Herculaneum, one of the two cities buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, and the magical island of Capri, among others. There was a distinctly Neapolitan feel about our musical feast in the Ristorante Tasso, Sorrento, as we sang traditional Neapolitan folk-songs in our best Italian accompanied by guitar and mandolin, and danced our way through the restaurant.
