Riga is the capital of Latvia – where everybody sings. Renowned world wide for its musical tradition, Latvia’s Nationwide Song and Dance Celebration, held every five years, involves people from the smallest village to the largest city; our aim is to give you a taste of this wonderful culture. We are booked to sing in the marvellous 13th-century Riga Dom with Haydn’s Nelson Mass as our main work, written at the very end of the 18th century when Napoleon was doing his best to conquer the whole of Europe. Nelson is said to have become a personal friend of Haydn’s, but how the work came to acquire his name is unknown.
Our second piece may well be receiving its first Latvian performance. Sir David Willcocks’s choral arrangement of Widor’s famous Toccata was written for The Really Big Chorus (plus orchestra and, of course, organ), and we not only premiered this at the Royal Albert Hall but also in Widor’s church in Paris.
