THE SCRATCH® GUERNSEY GATHERING
St Peter Port, Guernsey
Details for singers
Vocal Scores. Please bring your own copies of the music, and learn your part as well as you can before you join the trip. The programme comprises three choral works, all published by Novello: Gounod’s St Cecilia Mass (ISBN 978-0-85360-980-3), Mendelssohn’s Hear my Prayer (ISBN 978-0-7119-9073-9 (from which comes the famous ‘O for the wings of a dove’) and, for a rousing opener, Handel’s Zadok the Priest (in the original 7-part version, available singly, or as one of ‘Four Coronation Anthems’). Blackwell’s Music Shop can supply vocal scores (01865 333582; email firstname.lastname@example.org) and rehearsal material (CDs/MP3 files of your own vocal line) is available from ChoraLine .
Learning the music. There is limited rehearsal time once we get to Guernsey, so all singers are strongly urged to do their homework in advance and arrive at the first rehearsal having learnt the music to the best of their ability – the more practice you manage to put in at home, the better you will enjoy the rehearsals. As well as the rehearsal CDs mentioned above we have compiled a page of chorus instructions which we ask you to study in conjunction with your scores. Click here to download these instructions (opens in a new window).
Dress. Ladies: smart long black concert clothes (either a long black dress, or full-length skirt/trousers with a black blouse; smart black shoes). Gentlemen: dinner jacket with black bow-tie; black shoes. The hall is likely to be warm, and the stage lighting will make it even warmer. We can’t wear our colour-coded polo shirts for the concert, but you can always wear one at rehearsals, or engender local interest by wearing them around St Peter Port. If you don’t yet have one, you can download an order-form here.
