A Happy 50th Anniversary Year to all our singers and supporters!

9 January 2024

2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the very first performance of Messiah from Scratch® at the Royal Albert Hall. The idea was conceived in off-duty moments by young scientists on the teaching faculty of Imperial College, and Messiah from Scratch® first saw the light of day on Thursday 7 December 1974 after some nine months of planning. It has been an annual fixture at the RAH ever since. In the months that follow, we will bring you stories about that first performance and the people who made it happen, and we hope everyone will want to join in the 50th anniversary performance itself on Sunday 10 November (booking will open at the very beginning of March).

As for previous important anniversaries of Messiah from Scratch®, we will be auctioning the chance to conduct an additional performance of the Hallelujah Chorus after the concert interval. If you are not in the habit of conducting a choir of 3,000 singers and a large orchestra, it’s probably not too early to equip yourself with a conductor’s baton and to start to practise in front of the mirror. If you already conduct a choir, be sure to get them all to sponsor you, as this auction has been known to raise six-figure sums for the British Heart Foundation which will once again be the beneficiary.
