COSTA DEL SOL: DETAILS FOR SINGERS

Final details of our Spanish singing holiday, including flight and hotel information, will be emailed to you by Specialised Travel at the very beginning of March. This will include the music schedule, but which can also be downloaded here. Please note that you will need a black folder for the concert.

Our musicians. The conductor for Sing the Costa del Sol is Sam Evans, a busy professional baritone now rapidly making an international name for himself as a choral director. Orchestral accompaniment will be provided by the Orquesta Sinfonica de Málaga, with soloists from the UK.

Scores. Mozart’s Coronation Mass will be sung in Latin. We suggest the Bärenreiter edition, although other editions with bar numbers are likely to be compatible. Haydn’s Te Deum for the Empress Marie Therese (1800; Hob. XXIIIc: 2) is also sung in Latin. We use the edition edited by Denis McCaldin and published by OUP. Take great care when ordering, as Haydn wrote two settings of the Te Deum, both of them in C major. Buy from your local music shop if you are lucky enough still to have one, otherwise Blackwell’s Music Shop in Oxford offers a knowledgeable and efficient service. Contact them by telephone on 01865 333582 or email them at printed.music@blackwell.co.uk.

Learning the music. The concert takes place in Fuengirola’s popular main concert venue, so we anticipate a good audience. To give the best performance possible, and allow our shared rehearsals to concentrate on things other than note-learning, please make every effort to learn the music thoroughly before you leave home. If you’ve never sung these pieces before, ChoraLine has an app for choral singers enabling you to tune in and learn your part whenever you have a few spare minutes: visit https://www.choralineapp.com/. Additionally, you can buy ChoraLine CDs and MP3 files for the Mozart Mass from Presto Music. Type ‘choraline Mozart Coronation Mass’ into the search box, and all the voice options will come up.

What to wear. Concert dress is smart long-sleeved black tops for ladies and long black skirts or smart evening trousers. You’re welcome to wear some sparkly jewellery, but please don’t come covered in sequins, or with diamonds which will dazzle the audience. Gentlemen should wear black shirts (no tie), black trousers and black shoes. Female tenors: Please wear a black shirt and black skirt or trousers. TRBC polo-shirts are not to be worn as concert dress. Finally, please go easy on the perfume and aftershave; this is out of courtesy to your singing neighbours who may not want to breathe in wafts of Issey Myake or Chanel No. 5.
