Sir Karl Jenkins and Brian Kay: ‘significant’ birthdays in 2024.

25–29 April 2024

Your final travel and hotel details, plus the musical instructions, will be sent to you by Specialised Travel Concert Touring Ltd about three weeks before departure.

Our musicians. Our conductor for The Scratch Cypriot Delight is Brian Kay who, together with Sir Karl Jenkins, celebrates his 80th birthday in 2024. He needs no introduction to regular TRBC singers, but for first-timers his welcoming smile says it all, and he is adept at creating an excellent choir from the individual singers who meet at the first rehearsal. Orchestral accompaniment will be provided by the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra; Andrew Parnell is our repetiteur and the mezzo-soprano soloist will be Emily Gray (opens in a new window).

Scores. The complete vocal score of The Armed Man is published by Boosey & Hawkes (ISMN 9790060115455). Beware: B & H also publish an incomplete suite of vocal movements from this work which leaves out certain sections – be sure to bring the correct volume. If you don’t have a nearby music shop, Blackwell’s Music Shop in Oxford offer a knowledgeable and efficient service: contact them by telephone on 01865 333582 or email them at

Learning the music. We urge you to take some time to familiarise yourself with the music and the texts before you leave home. Chorus notes from Brian Kay may help – download them here and copy them into your score. If you’ve never sung The Armed Man before, ChoraLine has an app for choral singers enabling you to tune in and learn your part whenever you have a few spare minutes: visit ChoraLine CDs and MP3 files are now available from Presto Music: type ‘choraline armed man’ into the search box, and all the voice options will come up.

What to wear. This will be a formal concert and, going by the images on the web, the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra will look stunning in black and white. Dress for the chorus is specified in the Music Instructions which can be downloaded here and which will also be incorporated into the final details sent by Specialised Travel (see first paragraph).
