THE SCRATCH® RUSSIAN ROMANCE
Smolny Cathedral, St Petersburg
Our trip to St Petersburg gave Members of The Really Big Chorus the opportunity to sing in the sumptuous surroundings of Smolny Cathedral, part of a monastic complex built in the late 18th century for Elisabeth, daughter of Peter the Great. Brian Kay conducted the choir in performances of Haydn’s wonderfully effervescent Te Deum for the Empress Marie Therese and Mozart’s Coronation Mass. Our soloists were soprano Martene Grimson, mezzo-soprano Catherine Hopper, tenor James Geer and baritone Marcus Farnsworth.
Orchestral accompaniment was provided by the St Petersburg Camerata Orchestra, based at St Petersburg’s stunning Hermitage Museum (pictured right) where it gives regular concerts. (The orchestra is also known as the Hermitage Museum Orchestra.)
