Singers aged from 7 to 25 took part in our third Scratch Youth Messiah on 29 November 2015

Young singers aged from 7 to 25 (plus the occasional chaperone) take part annually in the Scratch Youth Messiah

Sunday 12 November 2017

Royal Albert Hall

Our fifth Scratch® Youth Messiah built on the strength of previous years, with over 1,400 young people from 36 choirs joining us for a morning rehearsal prior to the afternoon performance. School choirs, church choirs and youth choirs all joined in enthusiastically, and many who had sung in previous years added further choruses to their contribution this time around. It is encouraging to see the audience growing for this excellent and unique performance.

Accompaniment was provided by the English Festival Orchestra (leader Jonathan Evans-Jones), and the four superb young soloists were Alison Rose (soprano), Angharad Lyddon (mezzo-soprano), William Wallace (tenor) and Jake Muffett (baritone). The Royal Albert Hall’s ‘Father’ Willis organ was played by Jane Watts, and the conductor was Ben Parry.

The concert supported WaterAid through programme sales, bucket collections, sales of merchandise and fundraising efforts from the choirs. Singers raised money through JustGiving, and the choir raising the most money was – yet again – the Hackney Children’s Choir, under their Director Tom Daggett. Their total was a staggering £1,550 – of which one young singer raised £440; truly remarkable. WaterAid raised over £8,400 from the event, with the sum raised by the bucket collections (just over £1,000) doubled by the UK Government.

What you thought:
‘Such a wonderful opportunity – our students don’t know how lucky they are!’ (Guru Nanak Sikh Primary Academy)
‘Parents who attended were blown away by  the incredible standard (St Thomas of Canterbury School, Surrey)
‘Many congratulations on a fantastic and well organised event. We all had a great time and have had lots of very positive feedback from the choir members – they really enjoyed the experience!’ (East Riding Youth Singers)
