Our Hallelujah Chorus auction

22 May 2024

Our Hallelujah Chorus auction takes place at the Royal Albert Hall on 10 November – your chance for a brief moment in the spotlight!  As part of the 50th anniversary of Messiah from Scratch®, anyone can bid in our auction to conduct an extra performance of the Hallelujah Chorus.

Following the interval, an auctioneer from Bonhams will invite bids from choir and audience for the chance to conduct this famous chorus. You must be present in the Hall to bid – there is no on-line or telephone bidding. We invite the winner immediately to make their way to the podium to direct the 3,000-strong chorus and orchestra. After what we expect to be tumultuous applause, the second half of Handel’s Messiah will resume.

The beneficiary of all funds raised will be the British Heart Foundation, and The Really Big Chorus is delighted to be supporting its valuable work in this way. Auctions at previous TRBC anniversaries raised between £2,500 and £17,000 for the BHF, notably when the winner declined to conduct but offered the opportunity to the under bidder on the condition that they both donated the sums of money bid. That was an incredible Christmas present for this important national charity.

So, if you relish the chance to take part in our Hallelujah Chorus auction, start saving now, or consider gather sponsorship from friends and relatives. If conducting a very large choir and orchestra is not something you do regularly, you may also want to spend some time practising beating four in a bar in front of a mirror with the Hallelujah Chorus playing in the background. Or find a good YouTube video – there are plenty to choose from.

Book your ticket for Messiah from Scratch® as soon as you can. You can only book by post, and tickets for this anniversary performance are selling fast! Click here for booking details.
