Soloists at Messiah from Scratch 2022. L to R Edward Jowle, Georgie Malcolm, Beth Horak Hallett and Will Searle

MESSIAH FROM SCRATCH®
Royal Albert Hall

With singers at Messiah from Scratch® at the Royal Albert Hall in November once again stretching around the Circle, and a full programme of events during the previous 12 months, we feel as if life is returning to something like pre-pandemic normality. Principal Conductor Brian Kay was clearly pleased: ‘Our annual Messiah seems to get better year on year and there were many areas of the choral singing which were tighter than ever. The Hallelujah Chorus remains one of the wonders of the musical world: as the singers know it so well it packs the most amazing punch. The whole thing should be considered yet another triumph for the organisation!’

Our team of soloists comprised Georgie Malcolm (soprano), Bethany Horak Hallett (mezzo), William Searle (tenor) and Edward Jowle (bass-baritone). The English Festival Orchestra was led on this occasion by Clare Thompson, and we should also specifically mention Jane Watts (playing the RAH organ), Joe Atkins (solo trumpet), and Andrew Parnell (harpsichord) who underpinned everything.

The British Heart Foundation fielded their usual team of volunteers, this year providing support to the Royal Albert Hall programme sellers rather than handling the programmes themselves. Bucket collections at the close of the concert are no longer permitted, so the total raised was inevitably lower, but still almost £3,000 once all the programme expenses (including RAH sales commission) had been deducted. The level of income may increase once the advertising revenue is known.
