Messiah from Scratch® in 2019 (our 45th) was, in Brian Kay’s words, ‘another exciting performance, and the singing was better than ever, with particular praise this year for the sopranos who made such a great sound’. It was a truly exhilarating occasion, with singers filling every available seat in Arena, Stage, Choir and Stalls, and taking up three quarters of the Circle.

We had a wonderful team of soloists in Jessica Cale (soprano), Emily Sierra (mezzo), Filipe Manu (tenor) and Jerome Knox (baritone), supported by the excellent English Festival Orchestra, led by Alison Kelly. We should also single out Jane Watts (playing the RAH organ), Joe Atkins (solo trumpet), and Silas Wollston (harpsichord) who underpinned everything.

The concert supported the British Heart Foundation through programme sales, advertising and post-concert bucket collections – we will announce the total raised as soon as we know it.

Feedback from our singers:

‘What a wonderful performance to be part of! It was especially inspirational this year.’ Janet E.

‘What can I say … it was such an amazing experience! I sang Messiah from Scratch up in the Gods in 1996; this year we were  right in the heart of it all and there was no comparison!’ Elaine W.

‘Another fabulous Messiah and great start to Christmas.’  Tina W.

‘…one of my best experiences ever.’ Ignasi R.
