Performing to a large and enthusiastic audience in
Bath Abbey

2–7 August 2022

Our 2022 Summer School took place in Bath, as Warwick University was fully booked on account of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Our programme this year comprised Haydn’s Harmoniemesse and Morten Lauridsen’s Lux aeterna  and, over a period of four days, Brian Kay as conductor and Chris Finch as repetiteur and coach did a superb job in transforming an ad hoc bunch of 150 singers into a confident and disciplined choir. The final performance in Bath Abbey with Bath Philharmonia was a huge success – to quote Brian Kay: ‘I couldn’t have been more delighted with the result of our combined labours. It was a tough programme and I’d say the choir rose to the challenge splendidly. It’s hard to believe that almost none of them had ever sung either piece before.’

Our soloists were soprano Jessica Cale, mezzo-soprano Emily Gray, tenor Gareth Treseder, and bass-baritone Alex Ashworth. Bath Abbey lent its splendid acoustic, and the performance was given to a packed and appreciative audience, with more people looking on from beyond the west doors. Ticket sales and the post-concert bucket collection raised £2,600 for the Bath Philharmonia Young Carers Programme.

The week included some home-grown entertainment. On Wednesday we eavesdropped on an entertaining conversation between Brian and choral ambassador par excellence Suzi Digby, while on Thursday, in an inspired departure from the norm, we ‘sang along’ to the Sound of Music film (but without the dressing up).

You will very shortly be able to sign up for our 2023 Summer School, once again in Warwick, where we will study Mendelssohn’s Hymn of Praise (in English) and Clive Osgood’s very popular setting of Dixit Dominus. Check the website at the beginning of September.
