The Scratch® Mozart Requiem

Royal Albert Hall

Had this evening at the Royal Albert Hall been a competition, there would have been one outstanding winner (Mozart), but closely scored ‘runner up’ positions for everyone else. There were superb performances in the Requiem from all our soloists: Jenny Stafford (soprano, who, in addition, delighted the audience with her singing of Exsultate jubilate), Katie Coventry (mezzo), William Blake (tenor) and Ashley Riches (bass-baritone), while The Really Big Chorus sang to a really excellent standard which totally belied their scant 90 minutes of rehearsal.

Giving a sparkling interpretation of Mozart’s Fourth Horn Concerto was Ben Goldscheider, winner of the Brass Category Final in the 2016 BBC Young Musician Competition and one of the most exciting young players around. The English Festival Orchestra, led by Alison Kelly, opened the concert with the Overture to The Marriage of Figaro, and the whole evening was directed by the Principal Conductor of The Really Big Chorus, Brian Kay.

The charity which benefited from all programme sales, advertising and sponsorship was the British Heart Foundation. If you didn’t manage to support their valuable work on the night, you can do so now via their website.
