THE SCRATCH® TANTALISING TRIESTE

A visit to a most welcoming city

We made it at last! Our visit to Trieste was first scheduled for March 2020, but then postponed twice while the world grappled with the implications and restrictions of coronavirus. When the flights touched down in Venice and Bologna (yes, British Airways cancelled one of our flights to Venice with only a few weeks’ notice…) on Thursday 19 May, it was hard to believe we had really arrived.

For the 120 singers who joined us, the wait was worth it. The sun shone, excursions to Duino Castle, Muggia and Ljubljana were greatly enjoyed, as was the ‘musical feast’ in the historic Caffè San Marco, with entertainment from Andrea Binetti, Trieste’s most famous operetta star. We were warmly welcomed at the Chiesa di San Francesco, and Saturday’s concert was packed with an appreciative audience, complete with an enthroned Archbishop.

We visited as invited guests of the Municipality of Trieste, which had requested a performance of Mozart’s Requiem. The local Orchestra Filarmonica Città di Monfalcone did us proud and our wonderful soloists from the UK were Sarah Power (soprano), Emily Gray (mezzo), Gareth Treseder (tenor) and Adam Maxey (bass-baritone). Our continuo organist and rehearsal accompanist was Andrew Parnell, with TRBC Principal Conductor Brian Kay in charge of proceedings.

Brian Kay wrote: ‘That was such a great trip – a fabulous place with glorious weather. Everything contributed: lovely church, a friendly, welcoming and responsive orchestra and excellent local support. It was good to see so many familiar faces among the singers, but also to find a considerable number of newcomers who were so appreciative. The memories of Trieste will linger.’

There was also terrific praise from Andrew Parnell (see above): ‘An enormous thank you to you all for the fantastic arrangements made for the whole trip – such a celebration of getting back together again to perform live music.  It’s certainly one of the most memorable events in my professional life.’

Feedback from our singers:
‘Thank you very much for all your hard work in organising the trip. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, especially having the stress taken out of the travel and bookings. The rehearsals and concert were such fun and will give us many happy memories.’ Paul G

‘Brilliant to be back with TRBC and singing again. Have had an amazing trip – thank you to all the team!’ Lorraine R

‘It was wonderful – and finally singing without masks! Thanks to everyone for organising, and then rescheduling it all – twice: amazing! Helen G
